World's First Asbestos Research Center - Sydney |

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd presided over the opening dedication of the Bernie Banton Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (BBADRI) on January 20, 2009. Located on the grounds of Sydney's Concord Hospital, the $12 million facility is the world's largest stand alone institute dedicated entirely to the advancement of scientific investigations into asbestos-caused malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), an aggressive, deadly, and incurable form of lung cancer. Public and private donation funded, the BBADRI will be partially staffed by physicians and researchers from Concord Hospital.

Haining Yang awarded for Asbestos and Mesothelioma Research |

Haining Yang, M.D., a young female scientist specializes in the cancer research has been awarded for the asbestos and mesothelioma research. She was selected among fifty nine total applicants for asbestos related research grant and has been awarded grants total of $220,000 for her research on the asbestos and mesothelioma cancer. The grant will be distributed over a two year period. The first grant totals $100,000 was awarded by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation for performing research on developing therapeutic and preventative interventions. The second grant totals $120,000 was awarded by Hawaii's community Foundations Leahi Fund for her research and funding for study involving the detection of mesothelioma. |
